Should I Wear a Veil?

If I have written a blog about it, chances are it’s because someone has asked me my option on it- and I am learning that a writing a blog is so much more helpful to all of you readers! So today’s blog post is- Should I Wear A Veil?

After weeks of thinking about how I wanted to approach this topic, I landed on giving you two approaches- my thoughts from a wedding photographer’s perspective, and then the perspective of some of my past brides. I mean, I can chat all day about pros and cons, but in the end, I thought hearing from the wearers themselves would be super helpful!

Photographer perspective-

The pro’s-Veil shots can be so pretty, it adds an extra layer of detail, can help make your bridal experience feel “complete”. You can always keep it for ceremony and photos and remove it later.

The cons- If there is strong wind, it can feel overwhelming or distracting.

Past brides’ perspective-

“I chose not to wear a veil way before I even got married. I just knew it wasn’t for me. I think they're really beautiful, but I just didn't want one. I wanted my hair to be visible, as well as the back of my dress. I spent so much on my dress, it was important to me to make sure you could see all the beautiful details.” - Nicole

“I decided to go without due to being on the beach. I felt since my dress was flowy and simple the veil would be too much. I wish I had gotten a veil just to do pictures with... the ones with the bride and groom in it. But I do not regret not going with one. I also felt that it was too traditional for the wedding we wanted.” -Laurel

“As I tried on traditional wedding dresses I became frustrated and discouraged. I wanted the traditional look, but at 4’11” tall I felt like I was drowning in fabric. When I found my dress at Dillard.com my next step was to find shoes. I ended up ordering shoes and accessories from Nordstrom’s Trunk club and was thrilled with the options they sent me. I found my shoes and earrings through them. Last but not least was my veil. I didn’t know what to do there. I was visiting with my aunt-to-be Margaret and she pulled out a few vintage pieces she had and asked if I would be interested. I was immediately drawn to the veil I chose. It completed my outfit.” -Leah

“I chose to wear a veil because of that once in a lifetime bridal look! On the day I got to wear the most beautiful dress in my life, the veil was definitely the crowning jewel. My veil was an extra special sentiment because I wore my sisters veil and it served as my “something borrowed”. I am so glad I chose to wear a veil, it looks beautiful in the ceremony photos. I think it also frames the brides face and emphasizes the bridal beauty in a certain way as well.” -Ashley

“Originally I didn't think too much about a veil and was solely focused on picking the perfect dress. Once I found the most beautiful mermaid dress, they fit me with a cathedral style veil with crystals along the trim. I was in love. At first I was a little afraid the veil would take away from the dress, but boy was I wrong. I am so happy I decided to wear my beautiful veil. Given that I only wore it for a few minutes, I probably would have shopped around for something more reasonably priced, but again, it was completely worth it. And to even further validate my decision, Stephanie took the most amazing photos of us with this breathtaking veil!”- Summer

“I chose to wear a floor-length veil that trailed behind me because I loved the look of it walking down the aisle. It was beautiful (even majestic) during the ceremony and in photos as well. I think veils can add a “wow” factor if the right one is chosen.

I’m also glad I wore a veil because the pictures are amazing. Stephanie really knew how to take the veil and use it to her advantage during the photos. My favorite photo is with my veil appearing as if it’s floating behind me. Beautiful photos we will treasure forever.” -Leah

“I always knew that I wanted a cathedral length veil even before I got married and looking back on my wedding photos I am so happy I decided to wear one. I think they are so classic and beautiful and complete the bridal look.” - Marisa

Truly, what matters most is how YOU feel. It’s your wedding day, and if you’ve never given a second thought to wearing a veil (but you want be sure), try on a few different veil lengths with your dress and see how you feel in it. There is no right or wrong answer- I promise!
